The context

Cranberry tablets, cranberry juice and cranberry powder can prevent many urinary tract infections, cystitis, UTI, principally caused by Ecoli bacteria.  It is the most natural way identified to date to avoid cystitis.  The cranberry (vaccinium macrocarpon) products  and other small fruit such as wild blueberries are particularly rich in proanthocyanins, the most active phyto-antioxidants for the prevention of recurrent cystitis.

Cystitis is a global health problem. Recurrent UTI poses a challenge to doctors because it warrants the use of prolonged and multiple antibiotics and that antibiotic bacteria resistance phenomena are becoming more frequent.  This can give rise to toxic side effects such as hypersensitivity reactions especially among the elderly.  Aside from hypersensitivity reactions and anaphylaxis, one of the dangerous complications of antibiotic therapy is Steven Johnson syndrome or SJS, an immune-complex–mediated hypersensitivity complex that typically involves the skin and the mucous membranes resulting from the use of penicillin and sulfa drugs.  All these toxic effects from antibiotics have led experts to study alternative ways on how to treat recurrent urinary tract infections.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), urinary tract infections or cystitis are the leading cause of morbidity and health care expenditures for people of all ages.  An estimated 50% of women will have a UTI at some point in their lives. In Francenearly two million women each year are victims of recurrent urinary infections.

How is it made?

Phytonutrient Canada Urinary Formula is made of a 100% pure extract from wild blueberries (vaccinium angustifolium) to which we add a high concentration of cranberry (vaccinium macrocarpon) products. 100% natural.  No added sugar or preservatives. PC Urinary Formula has a pleasant taste and is available in aluminum bottles of 300 ml.

Phytonutrient Canada “PC” Urinary Formula is the result of a vast university research program.  Its recommended dose is 10 millilitres of PC Urinary Formula per day.  This 10ml provides you with the necessary cranberry daily intakes that Health Canada recommends to help reducing the risk of recurrent urinary tract infections (cystitis).

How and why does it work

The American cranberry (vaccinium macrocarpon) has historically been used by North American Indians to treat urinary tract infections. The Northern Europeans did the same thing with the lingonberry (vaccinium vitis-idea).

It was long believed that the origin of the protection against cystitis by cranberry juice was the acidification of the urine by the cranberry.  It was believed that cranberry made urine so acidic that the bacteria causing the majority of urinary tract infections could no longer grow and survive.  This approach was considered lame and additional research has revealed a much more complex mechanism than the acidification of the urine.

urinary-tract-infection1It is now recognized that the bacterium Escherichia coli (E. coli) is the most common cause of urinary tract infections and that it produces components called adhesins that allow it to adhere to the walls (tissues) of the urinary tract. The scientific community in general now thinks cranberry consumption causes excretion in the urine of relatively large amounts of hippuric acid (bacteriostatic agent) and that cranberries would contain anti-adhesin.  These anti-adhesins prevent bacteria from attaching to the walls of the bladder and urethra, so that they are excreted during urination.  This last explanation is generally favored today.

Although effective in preventing these infections, treatment without antibiotics requires the absorption of a large amount of cranberry (whole fruit or juice), which few people are willing to do. Industrial juice and sweetened cranberry cocktails are judged best in taste but they are greatly diluted and contain large amounts of sugar, dyes and other additives.  Dilution produces cranberry increases the daily amount to ingest.  Even with 100% pure juice, these therapies still require a significant consumption of pure cranberry products (whole fruit or juice and 100%) and this on an ongoing basis.  Although effective in the case of pure cranberry juice and fresh or frozen whole fruit, these treatments are most quickly abandoned.

Cranberries are extremely rich in vitamin C, moderately rich in vitamin A and have a relatively high fiber, anthocyanins and proanthocyanins content, all components that promote good health.  Preliminary results of tests carried out by researchers from the University of Wisconsin says that cranberry juice have also an antioxidant effect on clogged arteries, thereby preventing cardiovascular disease.  Finally, cranberry also acts as a deodoriser.

It is well established that for some people (young and old women), the consumption of cranberry juice is very effective and can reduce 20% to 60% the frequency of recurrent urinary tract infections
